Sexual Health News Update!

NEWS FLASH!

As a Sexual Health Educator, when I am preparing for presentations, I am often checking to see if information needs to be updated. Since you may be past the age when I would be coming into your classroom, I thought I would feed two birds with one scone and share some of my findings with you all here!

New Contraception Option Approved
A new hormone free IUD called Miudella was approved for use up to 3 years.  It is similar to Paraguard but it has less copper so they believe it will cause less changes to people’s menstrual cycles. It is expected to be available in the US sometime in 2026.

The Impact of Cuts to Medicaid On Reproductive Care Coverage
The Guttmacher Institute, a leading research and policy organization committed to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) worldwide, reports that Medicaid’s pivotal contributions to reproductive health are now threatened because of the budget reconciliation law enacted by Congress in July 2025.  They think out the impact of the upcoming changes and what will happen in the future if the full plan is enacted. https://www.guttmacher.org/2025/11/new-federal-medicaid-cuts-will-devastate-coverage-reproductive-health-care

Supreme Court Reject Challenge to Same Sex Marriage Protection
The court denied an appeal from Kim Davis, the former Kentucky county clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses. At a time where so many of our rights are being threatened, there are occasional moments of solace. It was refreshing to hear that the Supreme Court didn’t move back the clock on this one. https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/10/politics/supreme-court-same-sex-marriage-obergefell-kim-davis

Permanent contraception inquiries and procedures surge post-Dobbs
Since the decision to end the federal constitutional right to abortion in June 2022, people are worried about other law and policy changes that may restrict their access to contraception and other reproductive health care.

Study urges TikTok viewers to check sources of sexual health advice
I am sure this comes as no surprise to most of us. Social Media often spreads misinformation. The study found that more than 20% of sexual health-related TikToks created by non-medical influencers contained inaccurate info as opposed to the 3% of videos produced by medical professionals containing inaccuracies. It’s always a good idea to check sources. I initially found the article here at UPI Health News:

https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2025/09/29/TikTok-sexual-health-advice-misinformation/6081759155521/

That article didn’t give links or a lot of detailed info about their actual source so I did a check and found this to back it up!

As an employee of Cortland Children and Family Counseling Services, I am thankful for support I have received from Mike and my other co-workers here at the Center, Cortland Prevention Resources, and the agency as a whole.

As a sexual health educator, I am thankful for the teachers and other group leaders that have invited me into their spaces and for the participants who have given me their time and attention.
