New Over-The-Counter Birth Control

You may have recently heard the news that a couple of weeks ago, the FDA approved a form of the birth control pill to be purchased over-the-counter (OTC), without a prescription from a doctor. Here are some fast facts about this birth control pill:

·  The only form that’s been approved for OTC use is the “Opill,” or norgestrel. You might know it as the “mini pill,” because it only contains one hormone, Progestin. Progestin is a synthetic form of progesterone, which primarily thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the uterus.

·  Because the Opill does not contain estrogen, it does not pose the same side effects or health risks as “combined” pills that have both progestin and estrogen. However, side effects are still common with any form of hormonal birth control.

·  This lack of estrogen also means the Opill is slightly less effective at preventing pregnancy (93% effectiveness on average), and you also have to be stricter with your timing. Meaning, you have to take the pill within the same hour every day for the best effectiveness.

·  In trial runs with the Opill, only 6 participants out of 955 became pregnant while using the medication. This is a good sign that the medication’s instructions will be easily understandable and usable for those buying it.

·  Like with most other OTC medications, or condoms, there is not going to be an age restriction for buying the Opill. The cost is not yet known, but it’s worth keeping in mind that insurance plans don’t cover OTC medications.

·  The Opill will likely be available to buy online or at local pharmacies in early 2024.
